Stacey is hiding something. Not just that she has diabetes, but her parents aren't handling it well, and won't let Stacey learn to live with it before bringing her to every doctor they can find who might magically fix everything. Stacey's tired of it.
I still love how the issues that Martin wrote about in the lives of these girls are details that kids have to deal with even now. There's nothing particularly era-specific and though there are references to things that might not relate now, they're easily translatable.
I'm totally enjoying revisiting this series and wish that I had kept the collection I had years ago.
