Read: The Clanlands Almanac (#06-2022)

The Clanlands Almanac

The Clanlands Almanac: Seasonal Stories from Scotland by Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish

(companion to Clanlands and the Men In Kilts TV series)

This is an anthology of history, geography, stories, thoughts and conversations from Sam and Graham with tidbits of information about Outlander and their own histories and lives. Separated into months with a Dram of the Month and Clan of the month section in each, and a list of historically significant dates this is an interesting companion to the escapades we've seen previously from Sam and Graham.

I'll admit it - I'm a sucker. I love Outlander and have come to very much enjoy Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish. So when I found out there was going to be another book related to their television series Men in Kilts, I was all for it. I devoured Clanlands last year, and this Almanac is more of the same.

Sam and Graham have developed a highly amusing style of communicating between themselves and sharing that with the fans who partake in their exploits. While it does share historical and significant information, this is not a history book. It definitely doesn't take itself seriously enough to be anything of true informational value. But it's amusing, and contains many amusing anecdotes in the parlaying of information, so that readers walk away entertained, and with a little more information on the country of Scotland.

The only downfall is that it seems this volume was put out a little too quickly. There are a few glaring editorial issues that would have easily been fixed through careful proofreading which it seems this book didn't get. I still enjoy the banter, and it does add a bit of character to think that Graham or Sam made those errors themselves. But it pulls me out of the narrative, which is disappointing.
