I read: A Royal Guide to Monster Slaying

A Royal Guide to Monster Slaying by Kelley Armstrong
(Book 1 in series of same name)

Written by one of my very favourite authors, I had no doubt that I would enjoy this book.  It is a bit different than other things she's written, but it's enjoyable and still has well-developed characters and a plot that you know is headed somewhere big, even if you don't know exactly what that will be.

Armstrong is excellent at creating significant series with her works - her most well known is the Women of the Otherworld series, which ended with 13 books - and this is no different.  Monster Slaying is the first of a series, aimed toward middle-grade readers, but still amusing, intriguing and entertaining for everyone else who has enjoyed her previous work.

The story is a great one for presenting a strong teen, young-adult female character without ignoring the fact that she's still just a teen, young-adult in the first place.  The world is a different one than we know, but the emotions and reactions are the same, which makes her highly relatable.  The story is fantastical but well-rooted in the ideas that play through so many "finding yourself and your strength" stories.

Overall a great book, and an easy read, but something that leaves you wondering where the next story will take us.   Five stars.
