I Read: Wild Storm

WIld Storm by Richard Castle Wild Storm by Richard Castle

I realized recently that while I was lamenting the loss of the show Castle, I still had several of the novels based on the work of the character on my shelf to read. So I thought what better time to read them! (I could also re-watch the show, the DVDs might exist on my shelf too.)

Honestly, I've always kind of felt the books were a bit lacking. Especially the Derrick Storm ones. But that could be because I'm less attached to that character - it isn't based on anyone from the show, just on Richard Castle's back catalogue when we join the show. There isn't anything about Storm that really made me excited to read about him, but the books aren't bad either.

Wild Storm fits that same category for me - there's no reason not to read it. I didn't dislike it, but it's not something that I was particularly excited about either. And this particular storyline didn't really get my attention either. I did know from fairly early on what was going on, which might lead to my general disinterest in the story.  Who wants to read a story where they've already figured out the twist, AND they're not attached to any of the characters?

I also wonder about the author who pens these under the name of the fictional Richard Castle. I find the writing to be very pulpy and sometimes just not that good. Which I attribute to the character, not the actual author. I've always assumed that Castle was a well-received author, but not necessarily an epically good writer. Even when I was watching the show. I've looked up the author behind the books, but never looked into his other works, under his own name. I don't want to confirm my suspicions that the Castle style of writing, is really his. I'd rather keep my delusion that the style is all about Castle.

Wild Storm definitely fits the bill of a fluffy quick-to-read mystery with a bit of love thrown in. All good mysteries seem to have a bit of love in there. I recommend it if you want to spend a short amount of time on a book that has ties to a TV show.
